Two former heads of News International — the umbrella group comprising News Corp’s British newspapers — were among five people formally charged today (Tuesday) with bribing public officials in exchange for confidential information. The two are Andy Coulson, who after leaving News International became the spokesman for Prime Minister David Cameron, and Rebekah Brooks, often described as Rupert Murdoch’s “protege.” Among the others charged is Bettina Jordan Barber, a Ministry of Defense official, who reportedly received $160,000 in cash over a seven-year span from Brooks and John Kay, the former chief reporter of the London Sun for information that formed a series of stories in the newspaper.
