The international premiere of Wong Kar Wai’s epic film The Grandmaster, starring Tony Leung, has been selected to open the Berlin Film Festival on February 9, the festival announced today (Wednesday). Screening out of competition (Wong is also this year’s jury president), the film also features several well-known Chinese actors and “hundreds of Asia’s top martial artists.” In a statement, the festival said that the film “delves into the eternal question in martial arts of whether the victor is more than merely the ‘last man standing.'” It quoted festival director Dieter Kosslick as saying that with The Grandmaster, Wong “has added a new and exciting facet to his body of works, and created an artful, visually powerful genre [martial arts] film.”
