The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey had an impressive opening overseas, where it brought in an estimated $138.2 million in 56 markets, putting its worldwide total at $223 million. The U.K. boasted the biggest single opening — $18.3 million in 601 theaters, or a whopping $30,000 per-theater average. Meanwhile, IMAX issued a news release noting that The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey broke its overseas record for December. Screening in 126 big-screen locations, the movie averaged nearly $40,000 per theater for a total of $5 million. Meanwhile, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 2 added $11.2 million to its overseas total, which pushed it passed the $500-million mark to $501.4 million, making it by far the most successful installment of the five-film vampire chronicle.
