In an apparent effort to spur the transition from physical-disc to cloud-based distribution, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment said on Tuesday that it is releasing the hit action film Taken 2 for downloading or streaming on its Digital HD platform nearly a month before its release in stores on January 15. Priced at around $15, it is now available on such digital stores as Amazon Instant Video, Apple’s iTunes, Sony’s PlayStation, Walmart’s Vudu, Microsoft’s Xbox Video, and YouTube. The price of the physical disc will be $39.99 for a DVD/Blu-ray combo pack or $29.98 for the DVD only. Clearly the studio sees cloud-based distribution as the wave of the future. “America will wake up on Christmas morning to more than 16 million new connected devices under the tree this year, making it the year of the connected consumer,” Mike Dunn, president of Fox Home Entertainment, said in a statement. “The unprecedented explosion of smartphones, tablets and smart TVs give Taken 2 a great runway to reach more than 110 million active movie viewers across all of our Digital HD retail partners.”
