STUDY CALLS FOR MORE GAY HOSTS, CHARACTERS ON CHILDREN’S TV

BBC children’s programs should include more gay hosts and characters, according to a report commissioned by the publicly supported broadcaster and released today (Friday). Clare Luke of Solitaire Consulting, which produced the report for the BBC, said that it was important the children be “familiarized” with different sexual orientations “from an early age” and that they should therefore be able to see lesbian, gay and bisexual people on television “during their formative years.” Incorporating gay hosts and characters within programs would also have the effect of validating the feelings of gay children, the study concluded. On the other hand, the survey concluded that 20 percent of heterosexual men interviewed said that they thought were too many gay characters on BBC television and that more than one in ten said they were uncomfortable with the portrayal of gay people in the broadcast media.
