TIME WARNER CABLE SAYS IT WON’T CARRY CHANNELS NOBODY WATCHES

Time Warner Cable is warning media companies that force cable companies to buy a package of low-rated channels if they wish to carry one desirable one that it plans to drop the channels “that hardly anyone watches.” Speaking at an investors conference in New York, TWC chief Glenn Britt said, “We can’t keep carrying these giant packages…with the services that don’t carry their weight.” He noted that since 2008, while TWC’s programming costs have risen more than 30 percent, its revenue from video subscribers has increased only 15 percent. Britt noted that part of the problem is caused by the sluggish economy, particularly as it affects the housing industry. (It’s hard to sell subscriptions to new homeowners so long as new homes are not selling.)
