In what is regarded as the surest indicator of which film will win the Academy Award for best picture, Ben Affleck’s Argo took the top feature-film award from the Producers Guild of America on Saturday night. Over the last five years every PGA winner has gone on to triumph at the Oscars. Accepting the trophy — the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures — was Affleck, who not only co-produced the film but also directed and starred in it. “I’m really surprised,” he remarked, noting that he wasn’t even a member of the PGA. Affleck is a member of the Directors Guild of America, but that group snubbed him when it announced its nominees for best director earlier this month. Only two films have ever won the best picture Oscar without also being in the race for best director. Joining Affleck at the podium was co-producer Grant Heslov. George Clooney, the third producer of the film, did not attend.
