It is a rare, if not unprecedented, occasion when a film distributor that has gone out of business, returns after nearly five years. But such is the case with Picturehouse, the art-house distributor that was set up in 2005 as a joint venture between entrepreneurs Bob and Jeanne Berney and Time Warner units New Line Cinema and HBO — then abandoned three years later when Time Warner washed its hands of independent movies and elected to focus on blockbusters. During that period Picturehouse released such critically praised films as Pan’s Labyrinth, La vie en rose, and The Orphanage. Announcing their return, Bob Berney, who will serve as CEO and Jeanne Berney, as president, said: “We worked very hard to build it into a brand known for acquiring exciting, challenging and entertaining films from the U.S. and around the world, and helping them find their audiences.” They said that their first release will be a 3D film starring members of Metallica, titled Metallica Through the Never, to be released on August 9. Bob Berney told today’s (Wednesday) New York Times that he had been able to acquire the old Picturehouse logo from Time Warner. “The Picturehouse logo is just really close to my heart,” he told the newspaper.
