CENSORED CLOUD ATLAS LIKELY TO DEBUT AT NO. 1 IN CHINA

Despite the fact that 39 minutes of it have been deleted by Chinese censors and that the filmmakers have been criticized for casting Caucasian actors in Asian roles, Cloud Atlas is expected to replace Skyfall at the top of the Chinese box office this weekend, according to the state-run website China.org.cn, which cited online polls. The latest 007 film led last week with $36 million, well ahead of the second-place Chinese animated Pleasant Goat and the Big, Big Wolf with $10 million. Cloud Atlas is being promoted in China as a movie that evinces an “Oriental philosophy” — reincarnation. However, its earnings potential in China may be limited not only because of the widely reported censorship but also because pirated DVDs of the movie are widely available in video stores throughout the country.
