IRAN TO PRODUCE MOVIE RESPONDING TO ARGO

The Iranian government plans to produce a film that will respond to Ben Affleck’s Argo, set during the 1979 hostage crisis. Iranian director Ataollah Salmanian said on Tuesday that the movie, titled The General Staff, “will be a big production” and “an appropriate response to the ahistoric [lacking historical validity] film Argo.” Salmanian said that he had used eyewitness accounts to write the screenplay, which he will also direct. The English-language Tehran Times said today (Wednesday) that funding will be provided by the Iranian government’s Art Bureau, an affiliate of the Islamic Ideology Dissemination Organization. The newspaper said that the Iranian government “officially” regards the American film as anti-Iranian. Also in the works, said the newspaper, is a TV series about the seizure of the U.S. embassy in 1979, titled The Broken Paw. The Times offered no explanation of the title.
