Today show host Matt Lauer has advised NBC executives to let Ann Curry, his former co-anchor out of her contract immediately so she can move to CNN when former Today show producer Jeff Zucker takes over the reins at the cable news network next month, reported today (Wednesday). The gossip website quoted a source as saying that he “can’t imagine why the bosses are dragging their feet and are at a stalemate. It would allow Ann to get back on the air on a regular basis and everyone can move on from the debacle. Matt only wishes Ann the best and thinks it’s for the best if she were to take a job at another network.” It had been previously speculated that Lauer had instigated Curry’s departure from Today by threatening not to re-up for the show unless she was removed. NBC executives have maintained, however, that Lauer had nothing to do with Curry’s removal. Ratings for Today slid during the year that Curry co-hosted, falling behind those for ABC’s Good Morning America. In a tearful final appearance Curry apologized to fans for not being able to “take the ball all the way to the finish line, but, man, I did try.” Ratings for Today have continued to fall since Curry left.
