Nearly half of all DVDs and Blu-ray discs rented today are dispensed via Redbox kiosks. Home Media magazine reports that, as of the end of 2012, Redbox commanded 45.3 percent share of the physical disc rental market, up 7.5 points from the fourth quarter a year earlier. Blu-ray represented 12.5 percent of those rentals. In a statement, Paul Davis, CEO of Coinstar, Rebox’s corporate parent said, “We are uniquely positioned to take advantage of the increased acceptance of Blu-ray given our value price point and marketing assets, which we plan to further leverage to help consumers discover and explore the format,” He also indicated that Redbox Instant will launch by the end of next month. The subscription service allows customers to rent four DVDs from kiosks and access an unlimited number of movies via streaming for $8 a month — roughly the same price Netflix charges for streaming alone.
