TV and sports writers are puzzling over the relatively low ratings in the San Francisco/San Jose/Oakland market for the Super Bowl. While the game set a record for the most-watched television program in Baltimore history with a 59.6 local rating, the highest local record in the country, the home of the 49ers placed 28th on the Nielsen list of top-rated local markets for the game with a 46.5 rating. The market is regarded as a huge one for NFL football, boasting two teams (the Oakland Raiders is the other), and for days TV news reports had shown scenes from San Francisco decked out in crimson and gold, the 49ers’ colors. Although the local ratings collapsewas the subject of numerous newspaper articles and blog posts on Tuesday, it went unmentioned in San Francisco’s two major newspapers, the San Francisco Chronicle and the Examiner.
