The holiday season’s biggest blockbusters are hitting the video stores and taking over the sales charts. According to the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart, which tracks overall disc sales, DreamWorks Animation’s Rise of the Guardians, which disappointed at the box office, was a clear sales winner in its first week in the stores, beating out the video debut of 20th Century Fox’s Life of Pi, a stronger performer at the box office. While actual sales figures are not disclosed, Nielsen indicated that Life of Pi sold 69.2 percent as many discs as Guardians. Placing third was last week’s No. 1 video, Disney’s Wreck-It Ralph, followed by Lionsgate’s The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 2. Fox’s Red Dawn, another theatrical disappointment with only $44.81 million in ticket sales, came in at No. 5 on the video chart, coming in ahead of MGM’s Skyfall, which did $304 million in domestic theatrical business.
