Three blockbuster movies that arrived in theaters around the Christmas holiday period hit the video counters last week and quickly became best sellers. Topping the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart was Warner Bros./New Line’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. While the chart does not disclose actual sales figures, it did indicate that the No. 2 seller, Universal’s Les Misérables, sold 33.8 percent as many units as The Hobbit and that the No. 3 film, Zero Dark Thirty, sold 21.4 percent fewer. All three movies sold more Blu-ray versions than standard DVDs. Of the three films, only Zero Dark Thirty was available on Netflix, Redbox and major online rental outlets. It quickly claimed first place on Home Media magazine’s video rental chart, followed by Warner Bros.’ Argo, which became available on Netflix and Redbox for the first time. Last week’s top rental film, MGM’s Skyfall, came in at No. 3.
