The question of whether NBC plans to replace Jay Leno as host of the Tonight show was left hanging Monday night as Leno, for the first time in a week, failed to bring it up during his monologue. His late-night rivals failed to do so as well, except for David Letterman, who has been silent on the matter since it arose. Like ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel and NBC’s Jimmy Fallon, Letterman barely touched on the subject, saying only that he had received a phone call from a CBS executive asking him if he’d be willing to change his first name to Jimmy. Conan O’Brien, who replaced Leno as host of Tonight four years ago — only to be replaced by Leno nine months later — returned from vacation and remained silent about the reported plans for Leno to be dumped again and this time replaced by Fallon.
