The reputation of sports as a sure television winner is being enhanced by CBS and Turner Broadcasting’s ratings results for their coverage of the NCAA Men’s Division 1 Basketball Tournament — better known as March Madness. Nielsen figures indicate that average ratings for the coverage on CBS, TBS, TNT, and truTV was up 9 percent from a year ago for the first week of the contests. The number of viewers, in fact, is higher than at any time since 1993. In a statement, CBS and Turner, citing a study by Bluefin Labs, a Cambridge, MA-based social TV analytics company, said that in addition to viewer growth, social media activity related to the contests was up a whopping 154 percent to 6.3 million comments during the week.
