Netflix has made another expensive acquisition — buying the rights to offer the entire third season of AMC’s serialized drama The Killing to its subscribers beginning three months after it airs in the U.S. The first two seasons of the series are already available for viewing online via Netflix’s site. Serialized dramas have been especially lucrative for AMC and other distributors inasmuch as they can be watched in marathon sessions and viewers don’t have to be worried about missing an episode featuring an important plot device. Ordinarily the previous season of a TV series becomes available online at about the same time a news season in launched. In a statement, Ted Sarandos, Netflix’s chief content officer, said, “We’re especially proud to bring Season 3 to our members so soon after it premieres on AMC … The Killing is a terrific serialized drama and we know our members love these high-quality shows.” Some analysts have warned that Netflix is overleveraged after incurring $5 billion in obligations and commitments to buy content.
