RETURN TO OZ

Will Oz the Great and Powerful pack enough wizardry to lift the box office as high as some analysts are forecasting? According to quite a few, the film is likely to become the first big blockbuster movie of the year and earn as much as $90-100 million in ticket sales this weekend, thereby lifting the domestic box office to its first win in seven weeks over the comparable week a year ago. (It’s not likely to be as big as The Hunger Games, which opened with $152.5 million later in the month last year, nor is it likely to equal the $116.1 million that Alice in Wonderland raked in in March 2010.) The film is also opening in numerous markets overseas amid predictions that its worldwide tally over the weekend could match its production cost of around $200-250 million. While reviews in the U.S. have been mixed, they have sometimes been downright rapturous overseas. Chris Tookey in the London Daily Mail compared it with the best of the fantasy films of the Golden Age of Hollywood and concluded “I enjoyed it immensely.”
