WARNER’S WON’T DELAY RELEASE OF GATSBY

Warner Bros. will not alter its plans to premiere The Great Gatsby domestically on May 10 following its selection by the Cannes Film Festival to open the festival on May 15, the Hollywood Reporter reported today (Wednesday), citing studio insiders. It marks the first time in memory that an opening film at the festival did not have its world premiere there, the trade publication indicated. One studio executive was quoted as saying that the timing was “prearranged” and took into consideration the crowded summer release schedule. If Warner Bros. had elected to delay opening the film until the following weekend, that would have put it in competition at the U.S. box office with the highly anticipated Star Trek Into Darkness.
