APPLE CHIEF COOK HAS A “VISION” FOR TV, BUT WON’T SAY WHAT IT IS

Apple CEO Tim Cook has clearly indicated that his company is working on revamping the television set as we know it — “There is a very grand vision,” he remarked — but just how it’s going to do that is something he’s not ready yet to reveal. At the D: All Things Digital conference in Rancho Palos Verdes, CA on Monday night, Cook said that the experience of watching TV is “not one that has been brought up-to-date for this decade. It’s still an experience much like 10 years ago or 20 years ago.” It was a curious comment, given the fact that during the past two decades large, flat-screen TVs have entered the home, producing high-definition images and displaying content from digital video recorders, the Internet, Blu-ray Disc players and videogame consoles — as well as traditional over-the-air and cable offerings. When asked specifically what he has in mind when he talks about transforming the TV experience, Cook responded, “I don’t want to go into detail. … It continues to be an area of great interest for us.”
