Leave it to Tyler Perry to pull in an impressive number of viewers even in the face of caustic criticism by reviewers. Tuesday night’s premiere of The Haves and the Have Nots drew 1.7 million viewers — not exactly Madea-sized numbers, but they were enough to make it the highest-rated series debut in history for Oprah’s OWN channel. Still, not everyone loves Perry’s take on black Americana. A petition posted on demands that OWN remove the show on the grounds that it perpetuates black stereotypes. It accuses Oprah and Perry of refusing “to utilize feedback from the conscious Black community and scholars on racism regarding the damage that Tyler Perry and his brand of entertainment perpetuate against the Black community.” In the Los Angeles Times, television columnist Mary McNamara wrote that the show was “so awful that the awfulness appears intentional. Except that might make it interesting, and it just isn’t.”
