A day after the audience for American Idol fell to a new record low of 11.08 million viewers, feuding between the two female judges, Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey, erupted with new venom. Minaj, after taunting Carey during the telecast, took to Twitter following the show, slamming her again. She told critics to ask “why a woman SO successful at her age is still so INSECURE, and bitter.” Minaj also referred to rumors that Carey might be replaced with former judge Jennifer Lopez, tweeting cryptically, “All dem #1s but JLo phone ringing? LOL.” It was hard to tell whether the feuding between the two judges might have been contrived to offset the ratings slippage. In 2006, the season finale drew 36.4 million viewers, the show’s top rating ever and more than three times the size of Wednesday’s audience.
UPDATE: American Idol tumbled to a new series low on Thursday, attracting just 10.98 million viewers and posting a 2.5 rating/8 share among adults 18-49. It was crushed by CBS’s The Big Bang Theory with 15.69 million viewers and a 4.6/16 in the 18-49 age group.
