CBS’s coverage of the Tony Awards Sunday night may have drawn much praise from critics, particularly for the hosting performance of Neil Patrick Harris (“It was Harris’s night,” said the Associated Press); it may also have delivered the biggest audience the usually low-rated awards telecast has delivered since 2009 — an average of 7.2 million viewers, a rise of 20 percent from last year — but Harris got as big a licking from Game 2 of the NBA Finals between Miami and San Antonio as he did during the telecast from Sandy, the dog appearing in the current revival of Annie on Broadway. The basketball contest attracted 10 million viewers and also dominated the ratings among the key 18-49 age group. Los Angeles Times theater critic Charles McNulty observed that the camera pans of the audience at Radio City Music Hall during the telecast revealed a virtually all-white audience. “Broadway continues to have a diversity problem in both its artistic and producing ranks and in its audience,” he said, blaming the problem particularly on outrageous ticket prices and noting that families pay upwards of $1,500 to see a show. “Broadway is becoming the playground of the 1 percent set. This can’t continue. It’s choking the art form,” he said.
