It was a slam dunk for ABC’s coverage of the NBA Finals in the Nielsen weekly ratings. Game 7 finished on top of the list with 26.3 million viewers, while Game 6 drew 20.6 million. The NBA pregame show prior to Game 7 also landed in the top ten (at No. 9) with 6.6 million. Among the evening newscasts, NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams, which aired on four nights because of the Stanley Cup Finals, averaged 7.5 million viewers. Airing on only two nights because of the NBA Finals, ABC World News with Diane Sawyer placed second with 6.9 million viewers. the CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley, which aired on all five nights, averaged 5.6 million viewers. For the week overall, ABC remained in first place, thanks to its NBA coverage, with a 4.4 average household rating and an 8 share. NBC, boosted by The Voice, America’s Got Talent and the Stanley Cup, was in second place with an average 4.2/7. CBS, in summer rerun mode, placed third with a 3.4/6, while Fox fell far behind in last place with a lowly 1.9/3.
