The ad world was abuzz on Wednesday over the sudden firing of Men’s Wearhouse founder and spokesman (“You’re going to like the way you look. I guarantee it”) by the company’s board. In a statement announcing the termination of Zimmer as executive chairman, the company did not offer any explanation for its decision but said that it would discuss with Zimmer “the extend and terms of his future relationship with Men’s Wearhouse. Zimmer, who had founded the company in Houston in 1973 and built it into a chain with more than 1,000 stores, promptly issued a statement of his own, saying that the board had dismissed his concerns “about the direction the company is currently heading.” However, he said, “Instead of fostering the kind of dialogue in the boardroom that has, in part, contributed to our success, the board has inappropriately chosen to silence my concerns by terminating me as an executive officer.”
