The Muscular Dystrophy Assn., whose annual telethon had been associated with Jerry Lewis for 45 years (“Jerry’s Kids”) before the MDA unceremoniously dropped him as host and national chairman in 2011, is planning another big change this year. Instead of a two-day telecast featuring an array of stars manning the phones and appearing as performers on TV stations across the country that had donated their time, the telethon will be reduced instead to a two-hour special to air on ABC on Sept. 1, the MDA said on Monday. Lewis will not be participating in the telecast, but as today’s (Tuesday) Los Angeles Times observed in reporting the news of the pared-down format, the telethon has “lost much of its entertainment value, which had been tied to Lewis’s unpredictable persona.”
