The Netflix and Amazon Prime subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) streaming services may be attracting a lot of attention by the news media, but far more people prefer watching movies on DVD and Blu-ray Disc, according to a study by research group NPD. In a survey conducted during the first quarter, NPD found that 59 percent of consumers watched a movie on network TV. The same percentage also watched a movie on video disc. Another 44 percent watched a movie in a theater; 36 percent from a DVR; 21 percent from a rental kiosk, and 20 percent from an ad-supported multichannel video program distributor. But only 19 percent from a SVOD service and 13 percent from a transactional VOD service (in which a consumer pays for an individual movie on demand). Netflix is pushing hard to convert its disc-by-mail customers to streaming subscribers but having limited success, due in part to the policy of many studios to delay their releases to Netflix for 28 days after they hit the shelves of retailers. In a statement, NPD analyst Russ Crupnick said, “It’s not a ‘disc good, digital bad’ conversation, but a recognition that the consumer has yet to catch up with where distributors, services, and retailers want them to be.”
