In what appears to be a comment made before the disastrous debut of his latest movie, After Earth, Will Smith is quoted as saying that it was “an absolute necessity that the movie be a blockbuster.” In an interview posted Tuesday on the website DigitalSpy.com, Smith went on to say that he is thinking of moving out of blockbuster epics “and finding more danger in my artistic choices.” Nevertheless, he appeared also to dismiss speculation that he would put aside on-camera work and settle in to a full-time career as an executive producer. “I love people being wrapped in a story and being able to deliver that emotional punch line at the end of the story,” he said. Meanwhile, today’s (Wednesday) Hollywood Reporter suggests that the failure of the movie may result in Smith and his representatives having to make less lucrative deals with studios for future movies. “His deal is an absolute impediment to making money for the studios,” one source told the trade publication, noting that for Men in Black 3 he collected $100 million of the film’s $624-million gross.
