Loading up the box office with a slew of $100-million-plus movies may have taken a toll on some of those films after their opening weekends, but they pushed the overall box office to record heights in June. The month’s tally came to $1.25 million, overtaking the previous June record of $1.09 million set in 2009. And while receipts for May and June have been strong, they have not offset the mediocre sales during the first four months of the year. As things currently stand overall movie revenue for the year remains down about 2 percent from a year ago. Moreover, films last year by and large cost much less to produce than those this year, resulting in bigger profits for the studio. Last year at this time Universal’s Ted and Warner Bros.’ Magic Mike, each costing less than $50 million to produce, took in nearly $100 million between them on their opening weekend.
