Ray Donovan, the new drama starring Liev Schreiber, drew 1.35 million viewers in its debut Sunday night, the most ever to watch an original series premiere on Showtime, the pay-TV channel owned by CBS. A second showing of the episode on Sunday boosted the total number of viewers to 2.22 million. The numbers were no doubt boosted by the show’s lead-in, the season premiere of Dexter, which attracted 2.5 million viewers, a record for any season premiere on the channel. Reviews for Donovan were mostly positive. Robert Bianco in USA Today remarked that the Showtime drama “seems poised to advance the network’s already rising reputation.” Matthew Gilbert in the Boston Globe called it “the most vital new series of the year.” Dorothy Rabinowitz in the Wall Street Journal said it was “sharply written, sophisticated even at its most melodramatic, with first-class performances throughout.” And Linda Stasi in the New York Post summed up: “Great acting, writing and direction.”
