The Conjuring must have spooked a lot of box office pundits this weekend. Following their optimistic forecasts that the $20-million haunted-house thriller would scare up $25 million at the box office, the movie actually wound up with an estimated $41.5 million, beating the $135-million family film Turbo, the experts’ overwhelming favorite to take first place. That film actually ended up in third place with a disappointing $21.5 million ($31.2 million if receipts from Wednesday and Thursday are added). It was beaten by another animated family film, Despicable Me 2, which collected $25.1 million in its third weekend. Two other films that opened over the weekend were expected to be flops — and they were. Red 2 debuted with $18.5 million — at the low end of analysts’ estimates, and R.I.P.D. was a goner with $12.8 million.

The top ten films for the weekend, according to studio estimates compiled by Box Office Mojo:
1. The Conjuring, $41.5 million; 2. Despicable Me 2, $25. 1 million; 3. Turbo, $21.5 million; 4. Grown Ups 2, $20 million; 5. Red 2, $18.5 million; 6. Pacific Rim, $15.9 million; 7. R.I.P.D., $12.8 million; 8. The Heat, $9.3 million; 9. World War Z, $5.2 million; 10. Monsters University, $5 million.
