The Venice Film Festival announced today (Thursday) that Gravity, a 3D thriller from director Alfonso Cuaron, will open its 70th edition on August 28 and that Thierry Ragobert’s Amazonia, also in 3D, will close it on Sept. 7. A pared-down list of 54 films that will be screened at the festival was released to reporters, including 20 films that will compete for top prizes, including the Golden Lion. They include: Terry Gilliam’s The Zero Theorem, Jonathan Glazer’s Under the Skin, Stephen Frears’ Philomena and Child of God from James Franco. “I think we’ve got an interesting mix of established names and new names and of films of many different types,” Venice Film Festival director Alberto Barbera said as he unveiled the line-up.
