Actresses Halle Berry and Jennifer Garner testified in Sacramento on Tuesday in support of legislation aimed at preventing paparazzi from photographing the children of celebrities without parental consent. In her testimony, Garner said, “I don’t want a gang of shouting, arguing, law breaking photographers who camp out everywhere we are, all day every day, to continue traumatizing my kids.” She added, “My children aren’t actors or celebrities. They’re just kids like your kids or anyone else’s. And just like you want to protect your children, I want to protect mine.” Said Berry: “We’re not just whiny celebrities that many times people think we are. We’re moms here who are just trying to protect our children.” The measure was later approved by the Assembly Judiciary Committee, but it faces opposition from some members of the news media as it moves forward through the legislative process. Some news organizations claim that, while it is aimed at ruthless paparazzi, the law will also hinder legitimate reporters from doing their jobs.
