Reviews don’t come any worse than those for Getaway, starring Selena Gomez and Ethan Hawke. Peter Hartlaub of the San Francisco Chronicle warns that “you’ve probably seen this movie before, watching a child play with his toy Hot Wheels cars after eating multiple bowls of sugary breakfast cereal.” In fact, several critics suggest, the movie may present a record number of car-crash scenes (130 cars were reportedly wrecked during the making of the movie), although not a lot of the crashes seem to produce much in the way of damage. Mary Houlihan in the Chicago Tribune says that the film amounts to “one long chase scene.” Sound a bit like one of the Fast and Furious movies? Well, Stephen Holden in the New York Times writes that “the glimmers of wit and carnival humor” evident in those movies “are nowhere to be found in Getaway.” As for the performances, Sheri Linden in the Los Angeles Times describes them this way: “Gomez occupies a register consisting of one note, and it’s not a convincing one. Hawke has considerably more range, although when worry crosses his face, you suspect he’s thinking about the script.”
