China’s film regulators may no longer have to provide favored treatment for locally produced features in order to boost ticket sales. A recent study by PricewaterhouseCoopers seems to indicate that they’re doing fine on their own. As reported by Reuters, the study disclosed that from January to June domestic films outperformed imported ones by 65 percent in China. By contrast, last year foreign films — principally those from Hollywood — brought in twice the amount of revenue as domestic ones. The accounting firm is predicting that box-office revenue in China will grow at a yearly rate of 15.6 percent over the next five years, hitting $5.5 billion, roughly half the U.S. box-office total last year.
