Miley Cyrus, whose performance at the MTV Video Music Awards a week ago touched off one of the most angry debates over television decency since Janet Jackson’s so-called wardrobe malfunction at the Super Bowl in 2004, insists that her critics are “over-thinking” it. In an interview with MTV News, Cyrus said, “You’re thinking about it more than I thought about it when I did it. I didn’t even think about it ’cause that’s just me.” The 20-year-old singer/actress maintained that she was surprised by the reaction to her appearance on the VMAs. “Madonna’s done it. Britney’s done it. Every VMA performance, that’s what you’re looking for — you’re wanting to make history.” She may have succeeded, but not for any reason she may have anticipated. Days after her TV appearance, the word “twerking” — the suggestive dance move that sparked the controversy — entered the Oxford Dictionary Online.
