Nielsen Research plans to begin providing ratings data on television shows watched on mobile devices beginning next fall, published reports said today (Friday). According to the reports, Nielsen will provide details of its plan at an Advertising Week conference in New York on Tuesday. But while the announcement will come at the beginning of the new fall season, the company does not plan to begin providing data about viewing on tablets and smartphones until next fall, the reports indicated. It was not immediately clear how Nielsen intends to present the data. Currently television shows available online often have fewer commercials than their on-air counterparts. But over the next year that could change, particularly if, over the coming year, the networks lose their battle against Aereo and similar services that allow shows to be viewed online as they are being broadcast or to be recorded in their entirety and played back later. In any event, Nielsen has observed that in just the past two years, the number of people who watch full-length shows on tablet devices as soared — to 18 percent from 5 percent in 2011.
