500,000 PIRATED DOWNLOADS OF BREAKING BAD IN 12 HOURS

It’s hard to explain — but within 12 hours of the Breaking Bad telecast on Sunday night, more than 500,000 people had downloaded copies of the show from pirate sites, according to TorrentFreak.com, which tracks BitTorrent usage. Australians represented the largest number of downloaders — 18 percent of them, according to the website — despite the fact that the show is legally available in the country via pay-TV network Foxtel. The U.S., where Breaking Bad aired free on AMC and was also available via Netflix, was second with 14.5 percent of the downloads. “One of the explanations for this defiant behavior is that these downloaders simply prefer to torrent the show out of habit,” TorrentFreak observed. “In other cases people may find a pay TV subscription too expensive, or they simply prefer to watch the show at their own leisure instead of following rigid TV-schedules.”
