CNN’S NEW DAY HAS ITS WORST DAY

In what can only be viewed — charitably at that — as an embarrassment for Jeff Zucker, who made a name for himself as the producer of NBC’s Today show, his first major revamp as CNN chief, the morning show New Day recorded an average of only 37,000 viewers in the key 25-54 age group on Tuesday, its worst performance to date. The network attempted to play down that result by pointing out that since the new program was launched, its ratings in the morning time period are up 23 percent overall and 13 percent in the key demo versus last year. It also noted that its total-day audience was up 9 percent among all viewers and 15 percent among the 25-54 group.
CORRECTION: The 37,000 figure represents the number of 25-54-year-old viewers who watched during the 6:00 a.m. hour; the average between 6:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. was 73,000.
