On the eve of the opening of The Fifth Estate, about Wikileaks whistleblower Julian Assange, the San Francisco Chronicle is reporting that a movie about NSA leaker Edward Snowden is also in the works. Chronicle columnist Jon Carroll said today (Thursday) that the movie will be based on an upcoming book by Glenn Greenwald, the Guardian journalist who first reported on the Snowden documents. In his column, Carroll imagines how the screenplay could take shape — even without a resolution of the government’s case against Snowden and its efforts to bring him to justice. “I’m thinking that someone will buy the rights to Greenwald’s book, and it will become a low-budget movie, filled with jumpy handheld camera shots and moody landscapes,” he writes. “I’m not sure how many people will go see this, but I do bet it’ll get made.”
