A 34-episode Chinese TV dramatic series has been sold to a group of television stations in Africa, the state-run China Daily reports. Judging from the description of the series, it would be hard to imagine its being pitched to network executives in the U.S. First of all, there’s the matter of the title: Xiao Mai Enters the Town. That title, China Daily suggests, also amounts to a description of the series itself. It reports: “The series tells the story of a rural woman named Wang Xiao Mai, who accompanies her husband, Lin Mu, back to his home in Beijing, where she has to overcome many problems. The woman works hard and builds her own business and is finally accepted by Lin’s family.” One does wonder how hardliners in the Chinese politburo might react to such a plot, but, according to China Daily, the series has been praised by the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television and has won numerous awards.
