Although women accounted for just 11.4 percent of directors and 16.1 percent of writers for independent films released in the U.K. between 2010 and 2012, they accounted for 18.2 percent and 37 percent respectively of films in the top 20 during that period, according to research by the British Film Institute (BFI) and reported in the British trade journal Screen Daily. The study noted, however, that more recent studies indicate a grimmer story, with the number of female film writers falling to 13.4 percent of the total in 2012 and the number of female directors to 7.8 percent.
