Rebekah Brooks, the former head of News International and often described as the protégé of owner Rupert Murdoch, allegedly told the ex-wife of golf star Colin Montgomerie how easy it is to hack the mobile phones of stars like Paul McCartney. Testifying at Brooks’s trial in London, Eimeear Cook said that Brooks told her during a lunch with mutual friends “how ludicrous it was that people weren’t aware of the simple way to protect their privacy on their mobiles.” She went on to testify about Heather Mills’s throwing an engagement ring out of a hotel or apartment in New York,” an account of which ended up in NI’s now-defunct News of the World (although the report said that it was McCartney who tossed out the ring and that the incident took place in Miami). Brooks has consistently denied that she was aware that any phones had been hacked by reporters working at the tabloid.
