NHL SIGNS ITS BIGGEST TV DEAL EVER — IN CANADA

November 26, 2013 by · Leave a Comment

How big a sport is hockey in Canada? Well, consider this: Canadian cable channel Rogers Sportsnet announced today (Tuesday) that it has paid US$4.94 billion to air NHL games over the next 12 years. In 2011, NBC signed a U.S. deal with the NHL for $1.9 billion — 38 percent of what the Canadian cable network has paid. Canada has a population one tenth the size of the United States (it’s smaller than the state of California). In a statement, the NHL confirmed, “The agreement is the largest media rights deal in NHL history.”
