PLANES TAKES OFF TO NO. 1 ON HOME VIDEO

Disney’s Planes, which was originally intended to go directly to home video but which took a detour to theaters in August, where it took in $219 million worldwide, finally made it into retail stores last week and wound up No. 1 on the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales charts (DVD and Blu-ray Disc). Although actual sales figures are not reported, an indication of the film’s success on home video was suggested by the fact that it bumped last week’s No. 1 film, Warner Bros.’ Man of Steel out of the top position and into fourth. That movie brought in $662.8 million worldwide. Two other new releases on home video separated the two films, Warner’s We’re the Millers which placed second on the sales list, and 2 Guns, which debuted at No. 3. On Home Media magazine’s rental chart, 20th Century Fox’s The Heat remained at No. 1 for the second consecutive week.
