Thor: The Dark World plundered the world — or, any rate, 36 overseas markets — to the tune of $109.4 million over the weekend. The Disney/Marvel sequel, starring Chris Hemsworth in the title role and costarring Natalie Portman, opened at No. 1 in every market, topped by the U.K. with $13.4 million. Particularly impressive were the film’s results in 136 IMAX theaters where it averaged $40,000 per theater overall and $69,000 per theater in France and Hong Kong. In virtually every market, it exceeded the take of its predecessor. It is due to open in the U.S. on Friday. Meanwhile Gravity crossed the $200-million mark at the overseas box office as it wound up the weekend with $207.5 million. Its worldwide total now stands at $426.7 million.
