Broadcasters have let it be known that they will oppose any change in the FCC’s sports blackout rules. Responding to a notice by the FCC that it is considering abandoning the rules, which require stations to black out telecasts in cities where tickets to games have not been sold out, a spokesman for the broadcasters said, “We will strongly oppose any change in the rule. While affecting very few games the past decade, the blackout rule is very important in supporting NFL stadiums and the ability of NFL clubs to sell tickets and keeping our games attractive as television programming with large crowds,” Thus far this season, only one game has been blacked out.
