HULU BECOMES BILLION-DOLLAR BUSINESS

Hulu, which streams off-network shows primarily from the companies that own it, Disney/ABC, Fox, and Comcast/NBC, as well as an assortment of cable networks, said that it expects to gross $1 billion this year from advertising and subscriptions. But the online video service, which has fought off demands from writers and actors for additional payments for reuse of their work, did not indicate whether it is profitable. It said that it now counted 5 million subscribers, half of whom pay $8 a month for its Hulu Plus service; the others get its free ad-supported service. It recently added content from the BBC, including Doctor Who, Top Gear and Sherlock.
