Last July IMAX and Wanda Corporation, China’s largest exhibitor (it acquired AMC Theatres in the U.S. and Canada last year), signed an agreement in which Wanda agreed to install a minimum of 40 and up to 120 additional IMAX theaters at its 142 locations in mainland China. On Wednesday the two companies announced that Wanda had committed to the entire 120, which will bring its total number of IMAX screens to 210. Up to 40 of the additional theaters, they said, will employ IMAX’s new laser projection system. In a statement, Wanda exec Jerry Ye said that the company is “excited to bring this exciting technology to audiences in China. … Today’s significant expansion of our partnership is a testament to the value that IMAX brings to our business, supporting not only our growth, but also our mission to offer our patrons a premium, differentiated movie-going experience.”
